Strong Men…Strong Country!
I’ve been covering the progress of a group of Aboriginal men from across the Territory and Western Australia who have been part of a pilot scheme called the Defence Indigenous Development Program, which focuses on technical skills, English literacy and numeracy, personal development, nutrition, financial management, and military skills.
Under the umbrella of NORFORCE these guys have undergone life changing experiences as well as learning real skills that will enable them to get off the welfare cycle and be better prepared for roles as leaders and mentors to the younger members of their communities.
Here’s some pictures with some of the men’s own words
Private Harvey Ladd from Willowra
“I am from Willowra, it is in Warlpiri country. I am proud of my culture but I want a better future for myself.
After completing the program, I am looking forward to becoming an Aboriginal Community Police Officer.”
Private Kaine Wunta from Minyerri
” Before I started this course I used to drink too much and get into trouble and that is why I wanted to get out of Minyerri.
After this course, I am going to be a cattleman like my father.”
Lance Corporal Nicholas Djiagween from Broome
“I am hoping to get a good job soon around my home town, so I can spend more time with my family. The most important things that I am learning in this program are learning the things I should have learnt in school.
I aim to get a good job out of this and am working towards a great future for me and my family.”
